Garden Railway, or G Scale, includes several actual scales that all operate on 45mm track. The more common scales are 1:20.3, 1:24, 1: 29 and 1:32.
1:20.3 is sometimes called F or Fn3 scale, and simulates American 3 foot narrow gauge railroads, such as the various Colorado railroads or the White Pass & Yukon. It is usually the preference of the fine scale modeller. Most Accucraft and Bachmann
Spectrum trains are produced in this scale, as are the beautiful Hartford kits.
1:24 (including 1:22.5 and 1:25) are more representative of European metric gauge trains,
and are the usual size of the ever-popular LGB trains. While various American prototype locomotives and rolling stock is available in these sizes, most of the trains have a
"continental" flavor. Most of the structure kits are of these scales, and 1:24
(also called half inch scale), is the common doll house scale, which makes it very
attractive for completing those finishing touches ~ furniture, light fixtures, even
people and vehicles.
1:29 is generally accepted as the American "standard gauge" representation.
Aristocraft and USA Trains produce a broad array of locomotives and cars in
this most popular scale. It is generally "close enough" to 1:24 scale buildings
and vehicles to work without visual problems, yet gives a proper sense of
proportion to the tracks.
1:32 is the "connoisseur's" scale. An extremely accurate representation of standard
gauge railroads, some of the finest models are produced in this size.
